“We thought we were doing everything right for our son. We had no idea how much better things could be for him, for us. My only wish is that we would have joined Golden Mean much sooner.”

FAQs
How does Golden Mean work?
How does it work? We are not a school; we are a full day tutorial program. We offer a full day of various seminars, and members can use these to fulfill their homeschooling requirements. All of our members belong to religious umbrellas who oversee their work, rather than the county homeschool office.
Who is eligible for membership? Any child! If your child is not thriving in traditional education, be it at a school or at home, it is time to call us and see if we can help your child bloom!
What are eligibility requirements? There aren’t specific eligibility requirements. We look for a diverse community.
Who designs the seminars? All Seminars and tutorials are designed and lead by the GM tutors. Parents and members offer suggestions and ideas, and these are discussed with the community. Parents are also welcome to design and lead a seminar.
Where is GMTC located? The Golden Mean Center is located in Gambrills, Maryland. Easily accessible from Route 50 and Route 301.
How do I apply to GMTC? Just Contact Us today!
What are the operating hours? We have Morning Meeting at 8:15AM and we Clean Up at 2:45PM. As we are not a school, members may come and go during the day. Staying until 5:30PM is also possible.
Can I take my kid out for a month or two to travel? Yes! That’s a wonderful learning opportunity. As a homeschool parent, you are in charge of your child’s education and you get to make those decisions. We don’t count days.
How many children attend Golden Mean? Golden Mean is a close-knit community catering to 18-20 families, and up to 25 members.
What is a homeschool umbrella? In Maryland, there are two forms of homeschool oversight. The counties are legally required to provide homeschooling oversight, but parents can choose to use an umbrella organization that provides that oversight and reports to the county on behalf of the family.
GMTC, as a homeschool cooperative, requires families to follow the COMAR 13A.10.01 and .05. We assist families with both county regulations and umbrella organizations to meet their legal requirements.
Is Golden Mean a religious program?
No. Golden Mean has no religious affiliation.
Golden Mean Tutorial Cooperative does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, color, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin.
What type of children thrive at Golden Mean?
Short Answer - All kinds! Golden Mean fosters an environment of safety and inclusivity that bolsters children. We meet each child where they are, and develop a plan that best meets their needs. We are intentionally small; this allows the tutors to fully engage and know each child, making the educational and growth experiences highly individualized.
Where can I send my neurodiverse child? Golden Mean welcomes neurodiverse children! Golden Mean was born from the owner’s need to better support her son in a dynamic and social environment. Golden Mean has been dedicated to neurodiverse children from its origin.
Where can I send my anxious child? Given the increase in anxiety in children, it is no wonder more parents are looking for an alternative to traditional education. We have been successfully working with children with anxiety for over 10 years.
Where can I send my school averse child? Children suffering from school aversion are especially at risk. Our small size, our “feels like home” space, and the mutual respect in our community, has allowed many school averse children to be highly successful at Golden Mean.
Can I homeschool my child with learning disabilities? With Autism Spectrum Disorder? Of course! Golden Mean was founded to support the needs of the owner’s son, who has dyscalculia and a processing speed difference. Since its inception, Golden Mean has helped children on the autism spectrum thrive. We focus on building the whole child, not just the academics.
What if my child has an IEP or 504? We take the esoteric educational environment recommendations from psychological testing and evals, and we work to reproduce them in a viable, sustainable reality. Our goal is always to support the child where they need to be right now, while looking toward the future.
What do Golden Mean members do after they finish high school?
Do homeschoolers go to college? Of course! If that’s what they want to do. Golden Mean members have gone on to college and university, trade schools, and into the military.
